1. RACE SUMMARY

a) Performance Comparison

  • Original going report was GF (watered) and Windsor do enjoy watering the ground. Heavy rain for several hours before racing and showers during it "GF with Good places (watered)" so difficult to describe. The course has been divided this season from the 5f start to the course intersection and this race was run on the stands' side and there was no railing off in the straight so the runners ran on the 'real' stands' rail.
  • The time for the race was 61.55 secs (9-0) while the fillies' maiden was won in 61.05 secs (8-11). The fillies' race was run and hour and a half before this race and there had been more rain and the three previous races had cut the ground surface up. This race probably had a slightly slower pace and developed into a 2f sprint with some interference as both Green Park & Classic encounter hung right to the rails after making their efforts.
  • The following table gives the ratings given to the actual race performances ('Estimate') compared to the Profile ratings assigned before the race. A box in green denotes a runner that exceeded pre-race expectations and in pink a runner that performed notably below expectations. In either case it is useful to try to identify the reason for the difference.

GREEN PARK Strong 8/11f. Looked slightly less taking here than at Windsor on his debut. Tracked the average pace 3 to 4 wide from the rail and just over a length off the pace at halfway. Race turned into a 2f sprint and showed a medium change-of-pace to go just over a length clear by the start of the final furlong and hung right to the rails. Kept on in the last furlong to hold Classic Encounter but being overhauled by Scarlet Knight. Performed below expectations but the average pace contributed to that. Looked better last time out setting the pace on firmer going.
SCARLET KNIGHT 7/1 third favourite. Ran a very similar race to his debut here and finished in roughly the same position in relation to Green Park. Has not looked a natural 5f type and his win LTO was a staying performance in a very slow time. Broke slightly awkwardly and again got behind early despite just an average pace. More than 4 lengths off the pace at halfway and hard driven. In fourth and more than 3 lengths off leader Green Park entering the final furlong. Kept on well in the last half furlong and gaining on the leader and would probably have won at 5.5f. Needs 6f.
CLASSIC ENCOUNTER 16/1 fifth favourite on debut for a newish trainer who won FTO with his best 2yo in 2004. Looked well prepared and ready.
Ran quite freely early behind an average pace and pulled up to press the leader by a length at halfway. Race developed into a 2f sprint and well placed when that started. Showed less change-of-pace than Green Park and lost just over a length to him but went on with him and challenged him to the line although always held. Hung to the rail across Bertie Southstreet at the furlong post. A good debut and the trainer seems to assess his 2yos well before they run. Slightly below expectaions but only in line with the slowish time for the race.
BERTIE SOUTHSTREET 8/1 fourth favourite. Broke well and led on the rail after a furlong setting an avergae pace until the race quickened inside 2f out. Showed less change-of-pace than Green Park & Classic Encounter (who are smaller, readier 2yos) and hampered by Classic Encounter who hung across him after getting around 3/4L in front of him as the pace picked up. Lost a little ground but kept on. Probably needs 6f and a little time to develop his strength and mental maturity. Good potential.
SAND CROONER 25/1 6th favourite. Ran a similar race to Thirsk in finishing reasonably close to the placed horses but never being competitive. Around 2L off an average pace at halfway he was slightly outpaced 2F out as the race quickened and then plugged on. Trainer has a poor record with getting 2yo wins and he needs a drop in class to have a chance of a maiden win.
IN HOPE 66/1 outsider. Led for the first furlong but dropped back behind an average pace. Just over 2L off the leader at halfway but notably outpaced by the better types as the race quickened. Faded and slightly hampered.
LYRICAL BLUES 7/2 second favourite. Broke well and 2L off the pacemaker after 1F. Notably lost ground soon after and dropped to last pair. Never in race after and eased 1F out. Reportedly lame.

    2. PADDOCK REVIEW SUMMARY
    a) RATINGS & SUM-UPS
The table gives the Paddock Review rating for the runners. The descriptions to the ratings is the same as those given in the 2004 Sales rating section.
    Name Rating Sum-up
    Bertie Southstreet
    79
Biggest in the group and above average build. A likeable type and with good scope to continue his physical development.
Slightly leggy and a little narrow and needs to strengthen up to carry his size. A little mentally immature and wearing a cross noseband.
    Good, loose and rangy mover.
Better for 6f and with physical development. Ought to be able to rate over 85 and has the potential to be useful+.
    Green Park
    78
Smaller than Bertie Southstreet & Scarlet Knight but a readier type with a less scope for physical development. Good rangy mover. Similar rating to Windsor last time.
Looked 'down' here and not mentally thriving.
Classic Encounter 75 Absolutely classic 'medium sprinter'. Medium size and above average build. Very fit on debut.
In proportion and with good power behind. Unremarkable overall and a neat, ready, 2yo sprinter.
Ought to be able to rate 80+ but slightly limited by size for later season development.
    Scarlet Knight
    73
Rating upgraded because he's still developing his muscle to go with his big frame. Still looks too narrow & lengthy to be a real 5f type.
    Lyrical Blues
    72
A surprise. Not seen since the sales when he looked a smallish, ready early 2yo sprinter with little scope for later season. Given his solid form so far it was expected he might have developed well. However, he was very similar to the sales and not grown although a little heavier.
Smaller than the three higher rated colts and with limited development. Unlikely to improve rating and to struggle in conditions races.
    Sands Crooner
    68
Short, neat, heavily built sprinter and lacking range. Ready type.
    In Hope
    62
Smallest in the group (only filly with 6 colts). Medium size but lighter built and narrow. Very fit and ready but limited to low 60s rating and little scope to develop.
