MAY 12th SUMMING UP
|
A solid maiden by the course standards. Stratham progressed well
STO after an uncompetitive debut in a Yarmouth race which was better quality
than it looked at the time. His trainer has had two winners since his improved
run and Stratham should be close to his 'peak' here.
Bold Tiger's debut second looks less solid form although he should
show improvement from his prominent debut.
Royal Engineer was notable inexperienced on his debut but even allowing
for this showed almost no zip or promise. It would be a surprise to see
him improve enough from that level to win here.
Of the newcomers it will be interesting to see whether the filly I'lltellthejokes
can continue her trainer's good record with placed debut runners in 2005.
This race has a little more depth than though than many of those places
in weak early season races.

TRAINERS:

B Smart has his first 2yo runner. This is a late start compared
to the last two seasons. In 2003 he had a runner in the Brocklesby and
4 other early debuts. He had four debuts before this date in 2004. His
very earliest debuts tend to be 2yos of variable quality but competitive
for later wins at their level.
R Fahey has made a poor start with his 2yos so far and none have
been competitive. He had a debut runner backed from 33/1 to 5/1 that never
got into the race 5 days ago. In the last two seasons he has shown a similar
pattern with the early runners being moderate types. He has then run some
better 2yos FTO between mid-May and mid-June. In 2004 Tagula Sunrise (May
25th), Bolton Hall (June 2nd) & Golden Legacy (June 8th) were examples.
His runner here seems unlikely to be one of his better 2yos but a factor
to bear in mind for his debuts in the coming weeks.
