Pre-race Summary

March 25th : Post declarations
  • 10 declarations with nine colts plus Par Excellence.
  • A good set of declarations and should be an informative race and include a set of subsequent winners.
  • B. R. Millman has chosen Makabul to represent him. Having watched him win the first 2yo race of the season with a professional performance from a son of sire Makbul, this more expensive and higher sales rated type appeals as a strong contender. SP should be informative given that the trainer must know how he compares to Phantom Whisper.
  • P. D. Evans has declared both runners and J. Spencer rides Lionaire which possibly suggests this is the preferred runner and perhaps The London Gang is moderate. An alternative possibility is that they are both ordinary. However, inclined to slightly drop The London Gang's profile. In either case the better of the two should be professional on debut and capable of making a place and taking advantage of any inexperience from the best types. SP is unlikely to be a strong indicator of their prospects. Paddock review should be informative.
  • Puskas remains an interesting prospect but the trainer's record with debut runners suggests he ought to place but something will probably be too good for him today. If he were to win it would be a pretty sure sign of a useful+ runner.
  • R Hannon has chosen Godfrey Street and this runner fits the profile of an average season winner of his usual debuts in this race. As with Puskas it's likely something will be better or readier on the day.
  • B. Meehan's Tick The Box is an interesting prospect but it would be a big surprise if he were to be competitive. If he were it would be a very strong sign that he was useful+.

    March 22nd SUMMING UP
  • Usually an informative race featuring a number of future winners, although often the better runners may be inexperienced and more ready types may win.
  • On profile no runner looks likely to be a 70+ performer on the day although a number, especially Puskas, impress as 70+ winners in the season.
  • If Kung Hei were to run he would set a good benchmark to judge the newcomers against. Given the trainer's approaches the more expensive runners would be stretched to beat a professional Kung Hei on debut unless they were useful to superior types.
  • RACE QUALITY:
  • The race is usually of good quality for early season 2yo races and can provide a 70+ performance.
  • The last two runnings have had 13 declared runners and 12 of these have won during the season.
  • The 2004 race was notably good and included a French Group3 winner, a Listed winner and two Class B conditions winners.
  • TRAINERS:
  • R. Hannon usually runs an, at least, average early season sprint type. The last two runners for him have both run in the Lily Agnes at Chester in May as the high point of their ambitions.
  • M Channon usually runs an above average type in the race (Bravo Ragasso, [Compton's Eleven] and Bibury Flyer).
  • W. G. M. Turner has run an owner bred for Mrs Teversham in 2003-4 including the 2004 winner. He has three entries for different owners.
  • B. R. Millman won the first race of the 2yo season and has two entries here who were both entered for that race but did not run. He has had one poor runner in the race in the period 2002-4.
  • P. D. Evans had the second in the first race of the 2yo season and has two entries here who were both entered for that race but did not run. He has not had a runner in the period 2002-4.
  • The other trainers are the expected group of trainers which have early season runners.
  • Musselburgh March 27th = Kung Hei, Dusty City, Getbuzzin and Wovoka are also entered in this race which would probably be expected by southern trainers to be of a lesser standard than the Kempton race.
  • SIRES:
  • First Season Sires = City On A Hill. Mull Of Kintyre and Primo Valentino.
  • Notable that M. Channon and R. Hannon have entries by sires which do not normally get early 5f runners. Although both trainers can get 5f winners with runners by sires that other trainers would not even run over 5f.
  • SALES REVIEWS:
7 of the 18 entries were reviewed at the sales, three received ratings of 71 indicating better types (Getbuzzin, Godfrey Street & Makabul) and Lyrical Blues is capable of being competitive in the race if at his best. Overall the sales reviews indicate a race of normal quality could be formed from the entries.
