APRIL 25th SUMMING UP
|
A solid group overall although not obviously a superior runner amongst
them on profile (however Presto Vento would have been similarly difficult
to 'pick' in 2002). However there should be a good number of moderate to
average winners amongst the field assisted by their early season debuts.
Given the trainer's record in the race and with the benefit of a solid
debut Green Pride sets a good standard although he probably has moderate
scope to develop from the race.
Zafarilla, Hot and Sunrise Safari are most interesting of the newcomers
to possibly be competitive in this race against those with previous experience.

RACE QUALITY:
|
Usually a better race than the course and the Class would suggest. A range
of the Lambourn area and south-west trainers tend to run average winner
types and R Hannon in particular often runs useful or superior 2yos.
The range of abilities usually means that the better types will make the
first 3-5 places. Those that finish midfield or further back tend to be
claimer winners at best.

TRAINERS:
|
A race which draws runners from a similar pool of trainers each year.
R Hannon has won the last three runnings with Presto Vento (9/2
on debut, rated 100 at 2yo), Soonest (2/5f on STO, rated 93) & Elgin
Marbles (9/2 on debut, rated 81). In 2003 he also ran Mr Belvedere on debut
(unplaced at 20/1, rated 68).
B Meehan has had three runner in the last three races. In 2002 the
claimer level winners Dubai Dreams and Tiber Tiger were unplaced at 20/1
and 14/1. In 2004 he had Al Qudra finish 5th at 3/1 second favourite on
debut.
M Channon has run two claimer level winners in the race in 2002-3.
PD Evans has had a runner in each race 2002-4 ranging from a poor
non winner to the useful The Crooked Ring who finished second.
Notable for a runner in 2005 is Newmarket trainer J Noseda who has
not had a runner in the race recently.

PADDOCK & SALES REVIEWS:
|
Paddock:-
Green Pride (Windsor) rated 70. Not a particularly taking type and
a surprise to see him second favourite and preferred to Green Park. Has
grown well from the sales but not put on muscle in front, narrow overall.
On the positive side he's mature and ready although not with strong scope
to develop. Lacks quality overall.
Carmenero (Windsor) rated 69. Had looked like he might be a 'heavy
'trundler' at the sales and not be able to make the most of his strength.
He's still too compact but has strengthened up even more and is remarkably
mature in front (a good sign). He likely to be limited by his compactness
but his strength and maturity will allow him to compete well in early to
mid-season.
Tour D'Amour (Lingfield) rated 52. One of smallest in small field
and lacking build. Seemed to be following Fashion Chic around, 50s rating
probably.
Blue Army (Warwick) rated 50. Limited to low 50s rating
Sales:-
Twilight Agenda rated 68 with an above average chance of being a
competitive 2yo. He was small and short but stockily built and a ready
type. He should be able to be a 70s rated sprint winner but lacking scope
to develop through the season.
Hembury Fort rated 64 and a below average chance of being
a competitive 2yo at his level. Neat and medium build but a notably short
mover behind.
Hot was rated 67 and a medium size and build. Looked extremely mature
at the sales and very fit and could have gone straight to the course from
there. Limited scope to develop but looked like a just-add-water early
2yo runner and definitely competitive.
Oblo was rated 52 and with close to no chance of being competitive
at anything other than banded level.
Haiti Dancer was rated 66 but was small and lengthy and with a lighter
build behind. She looked to need 6f+ and therefore received a low rating
to be a competitive 2yo because of this.
